Course modified date: 12 Jul 2022

Learn about types of essay and writing. This course is ideal for intermediate learners.

Introduction
There are three main types of essay you will be asked to write as a student.
·       A discussion
·       A proposal
·       An argument

A discussion. In this type of essay, you are asked to directly discuss a topic – very often a social issue – and possibly even suggest a solution.
The essay is often presented as a statement followed by instructions on what to discuss.
For example:
‘Global warming is one of the most serious issues that the world is facing today. What are the causes of global warming and what measures can governments and individuals take to tackle the issue?’

There are three problems with understanding this type of essay:
1.You are being asked for your personal opinion; you must give your personal view.
2.There are often two tasks - discuss the causes and suggest a solution. Only discussing one of these will lose you marks.

3.The question is pretty vague, so you must spend more time planning.

You will learn

  1. Types of essay
  2. A discussion
  3. A proposal
  4. An argument
  5. Impersonal writing
  6. Personal writing
