Governance and Sustainable Development

Course modified date: 6 Feb 2025

Governance and Sustainable Development is an interdisciplinary course designed to provide learners with an in-depth understanding of the complex relationship between governance structures and sustainable development goals (SDGs). As the world faces mounting challenges such as climate change, poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation, effective governance becomes a critical factor in ensuring sustainable solutions. This course examines the evolving role of governance in addressing global sustainability challenges through policy formulation, decision-making processes, and international collaboration.

The course begins by introducing the concept of sustainable development, its historical development, and its relevance in today’s interconnected world. Participants will explore different governance frameworks, including top-down and bottom-up approaches, and how they influence sustainable development practices. Emphasis is placed on the role of national governments, international organizations, and local communities in the realization of sustainability objectives.

Through comprehensive case studies and practical exercises, learners will investigate the barriers and enablers of integrating sustainability into governance structures, such as institutional capacity, political will, and financial resources. The course also highlights the significance of multi-stakeholder engagement, public-private partnerships, and the involvement of civil society in decision-making processes. Ultimately, the goal of the course is to equip learners with the tools and knowledge to contribute effectively to the implementation of sustainable development initiatives within their own contexts
