First, Second And Third Person

First, Second And Third Person

Course modified date: 30 May 2022

In this course you will learn about first, seconds and third person sentences and what they are.

Introduction

What do we mean by the first, second and third person? Some people are used to the expression “first person” when referring to video games.

In ‘first person’ games, the gamer experiences the action as if he/she is doing it themselves.  They might say: ‘I did that lap in under a minute’ or ‘I shot 150 zombies on that last level.’

We all take the ‘first, second and third person’ for granted, but it is important for us to know how and when to use them correctly. To help you understand the first, second and third person, it is useful to think of a conversation between two people, me and you.  We could be talking about ourselves or each other (me and you), or talking about another person or people (he, her, it, they).

  • First person - me
  • Second person – you
  • Third person – the ‘other’ person or people, for example, him, her, them, etc.

You will learn

  1. Definition of the first, second and third person
  2. Singular and plural pronouns
  3. Pronouns used in the first and third person
  4. Practical uses of the first, second and third person
  5. Possessive pronouns and adjectives
  6. Common mistakes with grammar
