In this course you will learn about sentence features. This course is ideal for intermediate learners.

Introduction

A basic sentence needs at least two components. These are called “parts of speech”. These are needed to form a complete sentence which makes sense. 

There are four main functions of sentences. Choose the correct definition for each of the following descriptions.

  • 1. A sentence that tells you something, or gives information.  It ends with a full stop.
  • 2. A sentence that tells you to do something. These can be very short, forceful or angry.  They can end with a full stop or an exclamation mark - ‘!’
  • 3. A sentence that asks you something.  These sentences usually end with a question mark - ‘?’
  • 4. A sentence that tells you something, while conveying some emotion, such as excitement, surprise, fear or amusement. It can be very short and often ends with an exclamation mark -  ‘!’
